Okay here is the background on my problem:

A year or so ago I stumbled upon, or should I say i remember, stumbling across a website which basically ran inside firefox. To be clear, it was running an instance (virtual machine?) of Ubuntu Linux inside Firefox. I’m not really sure how else to describe it, but it launched an Operating System inside a host web browser.

Am I going crazy, or does such a website exsist, now or in the past?

thanks!

I imagine it was running a Java VNC client off to a VM somewhere.

Maybe you mean the VNC applet for Qemu at http://www.oszoo.org/wiki/index.php/Free_Live_OS_Zoo (the actual VNC applet page is down at the moment).

Or you mean YouOS, which shows a desktop in the browser?

Check Pyro. It is not Ubuntu, but I think it is what you were looking for.

    Hi,

Me too ! It was more like two years ago but there was such a thing. It could launch another operating system in a browser window. I never found it again.

There is however a slight chance you are confusing this with nomachine’s web compagnion. It is a java applet that runs in firefox which will start a nx (similiar to vnc) session in the browser window.

Third you might have seen something along the lines of SUSE studio where the have a testdrive feature which is basically a vncapplet.

you may have seen http://robin.sourceforge.net/ – and even if not, take a look now :)

Of course there is also http://www.albinoblacksheep.com/flash/winrg – our favourite web-based os ;-)

neither of those are ubuntu, though. so if you really did mean, “ubuntu inside firefox” I’d suggest you saw some kind of vm-plugin or remote desktop.

There was one, named Wubuntu. I blogged about it back in 2007. The site unfortunately went down soon afterwards…

I suppose you are searching for something like EyeOS:

    nomachineNX perhaps?

    http://www.nomachine.com

If you go to download and then select testdrive you’ll be able to connect to different servers (Germany and Italy) You can select KDE or GNOME etc.

    You should check this: http://firefrogz.free.fr/webubuntu/area51/

It’s JS only, not a VM, but it may have cheated you and your memory :)

That could be a frigging sweet way for people to try Ubuntu!

  13. VMware server wants you to run a browser VNC-ish plugin since version 2.0 instead of the client.
